How to do the Plank

  1. Rest your forearms on the floor with your elbows under your shoulders.

  2. Extend your legs back and lift your body into a straight line from head to heels.

  3. Squeeze your abs and glutes so your hips neither sag nor pike up.

  4. Hold the position, breathing normally, for your target time.

Abs

Secondary

Obliques, Shoulders

The abs flex your spine and stop it from arching. Mix crunching moves (crunches, leg raises) with anti-extension work (planks, rollouts).

Alternatives

Same muscles, similar movement: swap in one of these if the Plank doesn’t suit your gym or your joints.
