How to do the Machine Hip Abduction

  1. Sit in the machine with your back against the pad and the pads on the outside of your knees.

  2. Hold the handles and brace your core.

  3. Push your legs apart as far as you can, squeezing your glutes.

  4. Bring them back together slowly without letting the weights touch down.

Abductors

Secondary

Glutes

The outer hip (glute medius and minimus) moves the leg out and keeps your knees and pelvis stable on one leg. Abductions and band walks build it.

Alternatives

Same muscles, similar movement: swap in one of these if the Machine Hip Abduction doesn’t suit your gym or your joints.
