How to do the Side Plank

  1. Lie on your side with your forearm on the floor and elbow under your shoulder.

  2. Stack your feet and lift your hips so your body forms a straight line.

  3. Hold the position without letting your hips drop.

  4. Finish your time, then switch sides.

Obliques

Secondary

Abs, Shoulders

The obliques rotate and side-bend your trunk, and resist both. Side planks, Pallof presses, woodchops and carries cover every job.

Alternatives

Same muscles, similar movement: swap in one of these if the Side Plank doesn’t suit your gym or your joints.
